Do e-bikes have regenerative braking ? Yes, some have not in all. Regenerative braking normally available in cars. It is one of the advanced feature used for electric cars but when it comes to electric bicycles or e-bikes, there comes a big question. Let’s understand this regenerative braking concept in detail.

Regenerative braking working principle
Regenerative braking is a braking process in which when the vehicle stops the kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into heat or electricity. If the vehicle is battery powered then the converted electricity charges the battery and stored for further use. In short due to regenerative braking the battery of the vehicle charges itself while the vehicle is in motion. So number of times a driver uses brake on the road to reduce acceleration that number of time there is a possibility for the car battery to receive charge.
How does regenerative braking work on ebike?
It is in the similar way it works in a car the same principle can work here. But in an ebike the kind of motor used and the speed it attains during ride matters a lot for the use of regenerative braking. If brake is used while the electric bicycle is in motion the battery in it should receive some charge. But the question is does the electric bicycle use rocket engine ? Though it is quite possible to fit one in a cycle.

Does ebike require regenerative braking?
It is a completely personal choice for someone whether an ebike requires regenerative braking or not. For companies keeping the latest regenerative braking in an electric cycle is easy but the cost comes on the user whether the user is ready to pay that much amount for the cycle. Anyway electric bicycles come with more than 5 times higher cost than a traditional pedal cycle. Also the speed of the cycle matters a lot when it comes reg braking. When a direct drive hub motor is used in the cycle that has a magnetic drag a manufacturer can easily fit regenerative braking. Otherwise it is not useful for such cycles.
Ebikes with regenerative braking
There are some of the electric bicycles available in market which are equipped with regenerative braking system. So yes some e-bikes have regenerative braking. Here are some of the list of the ebikes.

Major reason e-bikes do not have regenerative braking
Electric bicycles have poor acceleration. Also the rider generates less acceleration by pedaling and more acceleration is generated by motor. So as a normal range of RPM normal motors have RPM of 5000 to 20000. But motors used in electric cycle does not have this much RPM so it becomes very tough and costly too for companies to provide regenerative braking.
Conclusion
Yes some of the e-bikes have regenerative braking but those are very less. If any electric bicycle has that kind of facility, the battery of the cycle can easily get charge while riding that down the hill. With this there are so many question arises like Is self charging bike possible? Can an electric bike charge itself? Here I found one of the interesting article from news paper.in which a discussion happened regarding an Indian inventor Vijayan Premanand, who has developed a mechanism in which the cycle can charge itself while riding. So it happens in such a way like it charges another battery while the cycle runs on separate battery. Click here.
