Advanced Driver Assistance System in short we call it ADAS. This driver assistance technologies are new technologies offered by vehicle manufacturing companies in their vehicle. ADAS system basically observed in CARS. Now a days various electric car manufacturing companies offer such technology for better driving experience.

ADAS meaning
Adas full form already explained above. As the name says some technologies are developed which helps drivers getting rid of basic issues during driving. e.g: Parking issues, linear collision issues, blind spot issues.
It is always a hectic task to park and un-park the car in a closely packed parking area. So there might be chance of hitting other cars, or other vehicles may hit , if the driver is unaware of other passing cars. Here rear cross traffic warning may solve the issue.
These adas technologies help drivers for safety driving. Also these advanced driver assistance systems reduce road accidents up to a high bench mark. To implement driver assist technology the car manufacturing company should get approval from NHTSA for it’s performance test.
As per the survey of World Health Organization (WHO) on road accidents, almost 1.35 million (13.5 lakh) die each year due to road casualties globally. According to the NHTSA(National Highway Transportation Safety Administration), ADAS technology has decreased car accident fatalities by 86%, injuries by 24%, and has decreased actual crashes by 18%. So ultimately this ADAS systems save lives.
Famous Technologies offered by Advanced driver-assistance system
Below are the technologies now has been included in ADAS system which is mainly divided into four categories
like Collision Warning, Collision Intervention, Driving Control Assistance, Other Systems as per NHTSA.
Collision Warning
Below are some of the technologies which fall under collision warning.
- Forward collision Warning — In this, the car detects a potential linear collision and gives warning to driver.
- Lane Departure Warning — Monitors vehicle’s lane and gives warning when it cross the lane or lane marker, to avoid accident with vehicles running on other lane.
- Rear Cross Traffic Warning — Some times driver aren’t able to detect any vehicle or object using their backup camera, especially when car is running on reverse direction. This technology warns the driver in such situation.
- Blind spot Warning — If a vehicle is in driver’s blind spot, it gives warning.
Collision Intervention
Automatic Emergency Brakes — Vehicle applies brake automatically when it suspects collision.
Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking — It Detects the pedestrian in front and applies the brake automatically.
Rear Automatic Braking — Detects a foreseen collision while in reverse and applies automatic brakes.
Blind Spot Intervention – If driver faces any blind spot during driving , it applies brake or provides steering.
Driving Control Assistance
Adaptive Cruise Control — Adjusts the speed of the car to keep a particular distance from the vehicle in front of it
Lane Centering Assistance — It gives steering continuously to keep the vehicle in the center of it’s lane.
Lane keeping Assistance — Steers to prevent the vehicle from departing the lane
Other Systems
Automatic High Beams — Semi-automatic beam switching is there, in which it gives high beam or low beam as per requirement of on coming vehicles.
Backup Camera — Rearview video system is there, to see back objects during reverse driving.
Automatic Crash Notification. — An automatic crash notification system informs emergency numbers that a crash has happened and provides its location for rescue.
Electric Cars offering Advanced Driver Assistance system
Below some of the adas technologies are mentioned used especially in newly made electric cars like Tesla model 3, bolt ev, F-150 lightning and Nissan Leaf etc. Some of the adas technologies are still under review of NHTSA.
- Tesla Autopilot
- Super Cruise
- BlueCruise
- ProPILOT
- Advanced Drive
- IQ Drive
- Active Driving Assistance
- Drive Wise
Conclusion
In above article most of the features of ADAS system has been explained but there will be separate articles on newer adas technologies especially used in electric cars like IQ drive and ProPilot. Hence we request to go through electric car manual properly just to understand the right approach of the Advanced Driver Assistance System. In some cars it gives only warning, while in some vehicles it actually performs the task based upon cost and model. So it will be quite sensible act to go through user manual before trusting such newer technologies.
